Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel manual review A better buy over petrol

Mahindra XUV 3XO Diesel Manual: The XUV 3XO is one of the few sub-compact SUVs that are available with a diesel engine and we drove the diesel manual version to see whether it makes sense to buy it. It has a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder diesel engine available in all trims and generates an output of 117bhp/300Nm which means it is more powerful than its rivals. This engine is available in the option of standard 6-speed manual gearbox as well as AMT automatic.

Driving Experience and Mileage

We drove the manual version and first impressions were positive with higher refinement levels compared to the earlier XUV300 diesel version and less diesel clatter. However, power delivery is linear, while turbo lag is well controlled. The 6-speed manual gearbox has slightly longer throws and yes, the clutch is a bit heavy while the ample amount of torque makes it easy to drive in traffic and the gearbox does not require constant shifting. Its torque is highest in the segment and this is evident when you cruise at highway speeds while feeling comfortable driving the car. It also feels very stable and does not feel heavy at all to drive, and it also has a sturdy feel to it which sets it apart from its rivals. However, efficiency is decent at 14-15 kmpl while the official figure is more than 20 kmpl.

Best option for the price

The diesel base variant starts at less than Rs 10 lakh, while the top-end variant is priced at less than Rs 15 lakh. This engine is likeable and delivers strong performance, while there’s also an AMT option available which we haven’t driven yet, although there’s no traditional automatic available. Those who want more mileage and want to cover longer distances will love the diesel version, which is the most powerful in its segment, which is an obvious attraction. Diesel engines are gradually disappearing from the compact SUV segment, with this engine the XUV 3XO could be a high-selling car.
