In Tula Daan, donate grains equal to the weight of yourself or whoever you want to donate to, to a needy person.
Tuladaan Rules
- While donating Tula Daan, keep in mind that this donation should be given only to a person who is helpless or needy. Never do Tula Daan when you are uninjured, otherwise you will not get any result.
- On Makar Sankranti, do Tula Daan only after bathing. One should not make any kind of donation without taking bath.
- If Tula Daan is done on Sunday of Shukla Paksha then it is considered best.
- Donation has special significance on Makar Sankranti. In such a situation, the importance of Tuladan done on this day increases even more.
- In Tuladan, you can donate grains, things related to Navgraha or Satnaj like (wheat, rice, pulses, maize, jowar, millet, whole gram).
How did the tradition of Tuladan begin?
According to mythological belief, at the behest of Lord Vishnu, Tuladan was organized by Lord Brahma to determine the importance of pilgrimages. Along with this, there is a very popular religious and mythological story related to Lord Krishna regarding Tula Daan, according to which, once Satyabhama donated him to Narada Muni in order to establish his monopoly on Shri Krishna. After this Narad Muni started taking Krishna. After this Satyabhama realized her mistake. But Satyabhama had no option but to stop Krishna, because she had already donated Krishna to Narada Muni.
Then Satyabhama asked Narada Muni about the solution to get Krishna back. Narada Muni asked Satyabhama to sacrifice her life to Lord Krishna. After this a scale was brought. Shri Krishna sat on one side of the scale and on the other side gold coins, jewellery, food grains etc. were kept. But even after keeping all this, the balance in Krishna’s favor did not budge. In such a situation, Rukmani asked Satyabhama to keep a basil leaf in the donation pan. As soon as Satyabhama placed a basil leaf in the donation scale, both the scales became equal. At this time, Shri Krishna himself had told about the importance of Tuladan.
