Mallikarjun Kharge On Arun Goel Resignation: Congress on Saturday (March 9) termed the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goyal as worrying for Indian democracy and said that an explanation should be given regarding this development.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that if the destruction of institutions is not stopped, democracy will be taken over by dictatorship. He posted on the social media platform ‘X’, ‘There is now only one Election Commissioner in India, while the Lok Sabha elections are to be announced in a few days. Why?”
Mallikarjun Kharge asked questions to Modi government
Congress president Kharge said, “As I have said earlier, if we do not stop the systematic destruction of our independent institutions, our democracy will be taken over by dictatorship.” He claimed that the Election Commission is now on the verge of collapse. It will be one of the last constitutional institutions. Congress President Kharge said, “Modi government should answer these questions and give proper clarification.”
KC Venugopal also targeted the government
Congress Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal also said that transparency should be ensured in the functioning of the Election Commission. Election Commissioner Arun Goyal resigned from the post on Saturday (March 9), a few days before the possible announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha election schedule. Goyal’s tenure was till December 2027.
KC Venugopal posted on ‘X’, “It is a matter of great concern for the health of the world’s largest democracy that Election Commissioner Arun Goyal has resigned just before the Lok Sabha elections. How is a constitutional body like the Election Commission working? There is no transparency in this at all.
Congress leader accused the government of putting pressure on EC
KC Venugopal accused the government of putting pressure on the Election Commission. Venugopal claimed, “In 2019 Lok Sabha Elections During this, Ashok Lavasa had expressed his disagreement against giving a clean chit to the Prime Minister for violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Later he had to face continuous interrogation. This attitude shows that the regime is bent on destroying democratic traditions.
He said that this development should be clarified and the Commission should be completely non-partisan at all times.
RJD expressed apprehension
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) spokesperson Manoj Jha posted on ‘X’, “News is coming that Election Commissioner Arun Goyal has resigned. Possibly just a week before the announcement of general elections to the Lok Sabha. “Such resignations raise doubts whether the elections will be free and fair?”
