Pakistan Blasphemy Killing: Another incident of mob lynching came to light in Pakistan (February 11). A man was burnt alive by a mob on charges of alleged blasphemy. This incident is from Nankana Sahib in Pakistan where people attacked the police station and killed a person on the charge of blasphemy. DSP, SHO of Nankana Sahib has been suspended after this incident.
This gruesome incident of mob lynching comes months after a mob thrashed and burnt a Sri Lankan manager in Sialkot for alleged blasphemy. According to Pakistani media, hundreds of people attacked a police station in Nankana Sahib on Saturday.
Many videos of the incident went viral
The mob first thrashed a person taken into police custody and then set him on fire. Several videos of the incident are also going viral on social media, in which hundreds of people are shown shouting slogans and entering a local police station. Initial reports suggest that the man was in police custody when the angry mob reached the area.
PM Shahbaz ordered an inquiry
Inspector General of Punjab Police Dr. Usman Anwar has suspended two senior police officers for failing to stop the murder. Taking cognizance of the incident, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered an inquiry. A statement issued from the Prime Minister’s Office said that why the police did not stop the violent mob? The rule of law should be ensured. No one should be allowed to influence the law.
PM Shehbaz said that ensuring peace and order was the first priority for the concerned officials responsible. Meanwhile, Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) chairman Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi condemned the incident, saying the manner in which the mob attacked the accused of blasphemy was regrettable.
In a tweet, Ashrafi said, “Inhuman torture and murder of a person accused of desecrating the Holy Quran in Nankana Sahib and attacking the police station is regrettable and condemnable.”
