BSP supremo Mayawati, who formed the district during her Chief Ministership, has scored a hat-trick of victories in the Lok Sabha elections here. Then the seat was named Akbarpur Surakshit. The special thing is that along with three consecutive wins, he also increased his victory margin every time.

Former CM Mayawati has a deep connection with Ambedkarnagar district. It started when, as soon as he became the Chief Minister for the first time, he divided Ayodhya (then Faizabad) district and announced a new district by the name of Ambedkar Nagar on 29 September 1995. For this she herself came to Akbarpur. In the rally held at Shivbaba Maidan itself, the public was first introduced to the DM and SP. After this, in each of his tenures as Chief Minister, he gave big development projects to the district.

The BSP chief also made this district his political workplace. He created a stir by announcing that he would contest from here in the 1998 general elections. Although even then most of the people felt that Mayawati would not come here till the end, but when nominations started, Mayawati along with reaching here also filed her nomination as a candidate from the reserved parliamentary seat of Akbarpur.

– BJP and SP fought with full strength by betting on local candidates. The result was that despite being tall, Mayawati could win by a margin of only 25,179 votes. He got the support of 2,63,561 voters.

Mayawati chose the same seat in the re-election held in 1999 after the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government at the Center fell in the trust vote. This time he performed better than the last election. By securing 2,59,762 votes, he defeated SP candidate Ram Piyare Suman by a huge margin of 53,386 votes.

– BSP chief also turned to Ambedkar Nagar in the 2004 elections. This time not only did he score a hat-trick of victories but he also succeeded in increasing the victory margin. He got 3,25,019 votes. He left SP’s Shankhlal Manjhi behind by 58,269 votes. With the success of the hat-trick, Mayawati took her number of votes beyond three lakhs. However, the SP candidate also saw a major increase in votes.
