Mexico Ecuador Conflict announced to cuts diplomatic ties with Ecuador after Jorge Glas arrest

Mexico Ecuador Conflict News: After the incident of police entering the Mexican Embassy in Quito, Ecuador, the President of Mexico said on Friday (April 5) evening that his country will end diplomatic relations with Ecuador. The diplomatic rift between Ecuador and Mexico deepened when Ecuadorian police officers forcibly entered the Mexican Embassy in the country’s capital Quito and detained Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glass.

George Glass had requested to be granted political asylum at the Mexican Embassy. After this development, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced the termination of diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

What is the charge against George Glass?

According to a BBC report, Ecuador did not want George Glass, who was facing corruption charges, to be given asylum in the embassy. He was convicted on charges of bribery and corruption. Ecuadorian authorities are still investigating further allegations against him. Although George had been living since December, the police forcibly entered and detained him on Friday, after which relations between the two countries have turned sour.

Ecuador police accused of breaking the embassy door

It is claimed that police broke down the exterior doors of the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in the Ecuadorian capital. “This is madness,” Roberto Canseco, head of the Mexican consular section in the capital Quito, told local press while standing outside the embassy. I am very worried because they may kill him (George Glass). There is no basis for doing this, it is completely out of the norm.”

What does Ecuador have to say?

Defending his decision, Ecuador’s president said in a statement: “Ecuador is a sovereign nation and we will not allow any criminal to remain free.”
Only then did Lopez Obrador hit back, calling George Glass’s detention an “authoritarian act” and a “gross violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty.” After this he announced to end all diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
