On one hand, the government gives the slogan that ‘Beti Padhao Beti Bachao’, on the other hand, 16 lakh girls have left their schooling in one year. The Education Ministry’s Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) has reported a decline in school enrollment for the academic year 2023-24. There has been a decline of more than 37 lakh in school education enrollment across the country.
This decline is highest in SC, ST, OBC and girls categories. This decline has been recorded in various categories of school education in the year 2023-24 as compared to the year 2022-23. Under Secondary, this decline from class 9th to 12th is more than 17 lakhs. However, an increase has been recorded in pre-primary enrollment.

Admissions decreased by 37.45 lakhs
This information has been revealed in the report of the Integrated District Education Information System (U-DISE Plus) of the Ministry of Education. According to this, there has been a decline of 37.45 lakh in student enrollment in primary, upper primary and higher secondary schools. The gross enrollment in the year 2023-24 was 24.80 crores. Earlier it was Rs 25.17 crore in the year 2022-23 and about Rs 26.52 crore in the year 2021-22.
Thus, in comparison to the year 2022-23, there has been a decrease of 37.45 lakh in this figure in the year 2023-24. However, this figure in percentage is only 1.5. During this period, the number of girl students declined by 16 lakh, while the number of boys declined by 21 lakh. The representation of minorities in the total enrollment was about 20 percent. The minorities included 79.6 percent Muslims, 10 percent Christians, 6.9 percent Sikhs, 2.2 percent Buddhists, 1.3 percent Jains and 0.1 percent Parsis.
Caste classification, fake students also identified
According to the report, 26.9 percent students registered at the national level are from general category, 18 percent from Scheduled Caste, 9.9 percent from Scheduled Tribe and 45.2 percent from Other Backward Class category. The report also said that the availability of schools, teachers and enrolled students varies in different states.
Personal data helped in identifying fake students and extending the benefits of government schemes to the right students. This made possible savings and better management of government expenditure. In states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, the percentage of available schools is higher than the percentage of enrolled students. Whereas, in states like Telangana, Punjab, Bengal, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Bihar, the percentage of schools available compared to enrolled students is quite low, indicating better utilization of infrastructure.
Even today 43 percent of schools in the country do not have computers.
According to Education Ministry data, only 57 percent of schools in the country have computers, while 53 percent have internet facilities. More than 90 percent of the schools are equipped with basic facilities like electricity and separate toilets for students.
