Tailang Swami Jayanti 2024: The birth anniversary of Tailang Swami or Trailang Swami will be celebrated on 21 January. He was full of devotion to Shiva. Both his parents were ardent devotees of Lord Shiva. The most surprising thing about him is that he was 300 years old and after 40 years he spent his entire life as a yogi.

The 417th birth anniversary of Tailang Swami will be celebrated on 21 January in the year 2024. However, there is no clear information regarding his date of birth. But it is said that he was born at the end of the 15th century. Due to lack of knowledge of their birth date, there is disagreement about their longevity.

‘Shiva’ is in the name of Tailang Swami itself.

There is disagreement regarding the date of birth of Tailang Swami. His birth anniversary is celebrated every year on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Pausha month. According to some disciples, Tailang Swami was born in 1529, while according to other biographers, he was born in 1607. It is said that Tailanga Swami was born in Kumbhilpuram, Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh.

His mother Vidyavati Devi and father Narasimha Rao were ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, due to which they also named Tailang Swami Shivram. Tailang Swami had divine powers and performed innumerable miracles in his life. He did not marry. It was only on the advice of his mother that Tailang Swami started worshiping Goddess Kali and after his mother’s death, he started living in a hut near the crematorium.

Tailang Swami was called Shiva while walking.

When Ramakrishna Paramahamsa saw Tailanga Swami he said, I saw the Universal Lord Himself using His body as a vehicle for manifestation, who was in an expanded state of knowledge. There was no consciousness in his body. There was very hot sand and due to the heat of the sun, on the sand on which no one was able to even step, Swami Ganapati Saraswati (Bhagirathanand Saraswati named him Swami Ganapati Saraswati while teaching Tailang Swami) was lying comfortably. Ramakrishna called Tailanga Swami the real Paramahamsa i.e. the supreme swan. Ramakrishna Paramhansa had described Tailang Swami as ‘Sachal Vishwanath’ i.e. the walking Shiva of Varanasi.

Great spiritual figures came to meet Tailang Swami

Tailang Swami was the master of Siddhis. Great spiritual personalities like Loknath Brahmachari, Benimadhav Brahmachari, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Vivekananda, Mahendranath Gupta, Lahiri Mahasaya, Swami Abhedananda, Premanand, Bhaskarananda, Vishudhananda and Sadhak Bapkhepa etc. came to meet him in Varanasi.

All pilgrimages are in the body

Tailang Swami believed that if you want to find God, then search within yourself. Ganga is in the nostrils, Yamuna in the mouth, Baikunth in the heart, Varanasi in the forehead and Haridwar in the navel. When all the pilgrimages are within the body then why should one wander here and there. Tailang Swami believed that the place where there is no hesitation or frustration in entering is Vaikuntha.

In 1733, Tailang Swami reached Prayag and took initiation into Sannyasa from Bhagiratha Anand Saraswati and then settled in Varanasi. He remained there till his death in 1887. On 26 December 1887, on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Paush month, he left his mortal body. It is said that Tailang Swami lived for 300 years but no one knows his exact age.

  • Only one who is free from attachment and beyond ego can be a Guru.
