Mitchell Santner Becomes New Zealand White Ball Captain: Mitchell Santner has been appointed as the new captain of New Zealand’s ODI and T20 team. He will replace Kane Williamson, who stepped down from the captaincy of the Kiwi team in the white ball format after the poor performance of the Kiwi team in the T20 World Cup. Santner has played more than 100 matches for New Zealand in both T20 and ODI formats. Till now, he has commanded his team in 24 T20 and four ODI matches and was seen captaining against Sri Lanka only last month.
Mitchell Santner, who plays the role of an all-rounder, said on getting the captaincy that it is a matter of pride for him. He said, “It is an honor to be given the captaincy of the national team. It was my childhood dream to play for New Zealand one day, but getting the captaincy of the team in two different formats is a matter of good fortune in itself.”
Mitchell Santner has captained the Kiwi team in four ODI matches so far, but the team has won only one of them. He has been very successful as a T20 captain. Santner has so far commanded New Zealand in 24 T20 matches, out of which the team has won 13 times. Let us tell you that in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Santner was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 2 crore.
Why did Mitchell Santner become the captain?
New Zealand’s head coach Gary Stead has also given the reason for making Mitchell Santner the white ball captain. He said that so that Tom Latham can concentrate more on Test cricket, Santner has been made the captain of the T20 and ODI team. Gary Stead said, “Tom Latham is an experienced and successful captain, who has led the team well in all three formats. Latham is doing well after taking over the captaincy of the Test team in October. We want him to give his full Concentrate only on Test cricket.
