Worship of monkey god is a unique tradition in Dharmaram village. In this village, which is located in Laxmanchanda mandal of Nirmal district, the villagers worship the monkey as a god. People here believe that the monkey god fulfills their wishes, and every year devotees come to this place and worship.
Monkey God Temple and its History
The temple of Monkey God in Dharmaram is decades old. This temple was established in 1978. Villagers say that earlier people in the village used to entertain themselves by listening to stories and mythological tales. One day a monkey came to the village from the forest and started listening to these stories carefully. Gradually that monkey started living in the village and started troubling the villagers with his antics.
Monkey’s death and beginning of worship
The villagers tried to drive the monkey out of the village, but to no avail. In the end, everyone together killed him and buried him outside the village. However, after some time, when the villagers went to the monkey’s grave, they took him out and started worshiping him. Seeing all this, the villagers decided that now this monkey will be worshiped as a god.
Construction of the temple and increase in the number of devotees
After this, the villagers collected donations and built a temple there. Along with the monkey idol, Shiva Lingam and Nandi idols were also installed in this temple. As the number of devotees increased, bathrooms and rooms were also built there. Now this temple has become a major religious place.
Annual fair and festival
Every year a fair is held in this temple in the month of December. During this fair, the monkey god is consecrated and a chariot festival is also organised. Devotees from Adilabad, Nirmal, Manchiryala, Karimnagar districts and also from neighboring Maharashtra come to participate in this festival. It has become a place where devotees come to worship the monkey god not only during festivals, but at all times.
