Not formula milk but pure mother’s milk

Mothers who do not have their own milk and can give this milk to their new born baby. This will not spoil his health at all. Many types of formula milk are available in the market, but in this way there are only 2 companies in India that claim mother’s milk. Two companies making baby milk claim that their company is really selling pure mother’s milk for new born babies or young children. No formula milk is being made in its name. The company says that the sale of this milk has increased a lot. On the other hand, many questions are being raised regarding this milk. The company making these milk is also fighting a legal battle to prove its truth. Because the license of these companies has been cancelled. 

Company’s claim regarding mother’s milk

In this area, two private companies are selling breast milk with patented technology. Both these companies have not received any kind of permission from the central government. Bengaluru-based Neolacta Lifesciences Pvt Ltd started selling breast milk in 2016. This company claims that it is producing such milk which is completely pure and it is exactly the same milk that mothers breastfeed their children. This company also claimed that this company collects the milk of lactating mothers and then sells it. This company takes the milk of only those mothers who voluntarily donate it.  After this he pasteurizes the milk taken from the mother and sells it to the parents of the babies at a high price. The company is also offering Human Milk Fortifier in powder form. This is the first company which claims that it is selling pure mother’s milk.

Neslac Biosciences Pvt Ltd

Mohali-based Nestlac Biosciences Pvt Ltd, launched in 2021, converts mothers’ milk back into powder form before selling them back at exorbitant prices. It claims that it has the technology to test the quality of milk and supplies milk to the milk bank of the hospital. Both the companies claim that the milk made by them is full of nutrition. Along with this, it fulfills the deficiency of mother’s milk. But this company has come under attack from other business models, academicians, social worker activists and more recently the central government.

Social worker against these companies

Social worker has expressed concern that this company is exploiting the poor. The social worker has raised the question that rural women are being forced to breastfeed and sell their milk to affluent urban families. Social worker says that this company which is claiming that we are selling mother’s milk but it is not so, it is selling only formula milk in the name of mother’s milk. 

Company embroiled in legal battle over selling breast milk

Within government departments, however, there is no agreement on how to classify human milk and who should regulate it. Despite the confusion, both NeoLacta and Neslak have got a license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Which was canceled in April and September this year. NeoLacta has launched its products "ayurvedic medicines" Also obtained license from Ayush Department of Karnataka to sell as Which was later canceled in September following the intervention of the Ministry of AYUSH following a report in The Times of India.

Speaking to ThePrint, Neolacta says it is running its business legitimately by following the highest ethical standards adapted globally. All attempts by ThePrint to reach Nestlak were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, a long battle is going on over the contentious issue of collection, processing and sale of human milk. In September, NeoLacta moved the Karnataka High Court against the cancellation of its AYUSH license.

Civil society groups who are against the commercialization of human milk are also planning to intervene in the matter and FSSAI is now considering taking legal action against NeoLacta. NeoLacta has obtained a stay order for now and its milk bottles and pouches are back in the market. Neslak’s website is operational and the status of the company is active with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
