Due to sudden increase in water pressure in Motihari’s Sikarhana river on Monday, the ring dam broke near North Sugav Panchayat of Sugauli. Ranjit Jha, head of North Sugao Panchayat, said that near Ward-8 of Godiganwa, about 30 feet long part was washed away due to the strong flow of the river in the afternoon. Information about the dam breach has been immediately given to the CO and the district administration. This incident has created a huge crisis in the surrounding areas.

According to the information, due to the breaking of the ring dam, the water of Sikarhana river has started spreading rapidly in Sarehi areas. According to the villagers, due to the strong flow of the river, there is a danger of the paddy and sugarcane crops standing in the fields drowning. Hundreds of houses in the surrounding villages are also at risk of water due to the breach of the dam. About 20 thousand people of North Sugao, North Chapra Bahas, South Chapra Bahas and Bhargaon panchayats may be affected by the flood.

Dam built in 2022but not repaired

Lalit Sahni, former head of North Sugao, said that this ring dam was built in 2022, but no repairs have been done since then. Due to negligence in maintaining the dam, it has now become a cause of danger. Due to the breach of the dam, there is a possibility of huge loss to the crops of these panchayats, due to which the farmers will have to face financial crisis.

Demand for immediate action from the administration

Local residents have demanded the district administration to immediately start relief and rescue operations. The strong current of water has worried the residents of the villages and there is fear among the people. People have expressed hope from the administration that in view of the threat of flood, immediate steps will be taken so that lives and crops can be saved.
