The aim of this project named Fission Surface Power Project is to build a small nuclear fission reactor which will generate energy for astronauts. This is very important for long space missions. NASA had awarded $5 million to its business partners in 2022, with each project designing a smaller reactor.

This is being seen as an important achievement towards a long presence on the Moon and Mars. With this, humans will be able to live on the Moon for a decade. The Sun in particular cannot be said to be a continuous source of energy on the Moon because it receives sunlight only 15 days out of 30. Whereas nuclear power, if controlled, can provide continuous energy.

Now in the next phase, NASA should implement these suggestions, after which this technology will be used in the launch. The final design of the reactor will be demonstrated in this phase. NASA wants to start the final phase in 2025 so that it will be ready to send to the Moon in the early 2030s. The reactor will work as a demonstration on the Moon for one year, after which it will continue to work for nine years. If successful, the technology will be adopted for Mars.
