Dr Bhanu Sharma, small animal interventional cardiologist at Max Petz Hospital, East of Kailash, said on Sunday that the 7-year-old dog, named Juliet, a beagle, was suffering from mitral valve disease for the past two years. The condition begins in animals when there are internal changes in the mitral valve leaflets.
Due to which blockages start occurring in the left side of the heart but after this surgery, the blood circulation inside the heart is restored. If this disease is not treated in time, there may be a possibility of heart failure.
This is called hybrid surgery
On May 30, doctors performed a transcatheter edge-to-edge repair procedure using valve clamps. It is also called hybrid surgery because it combines the processes of both micro and interventional surgery. This procedure is minimally invasive because it involves the beating heart. It is not like open heart surgery, which requires a lung bypass machine.
According to the caretaker of the puppy which underwent surgery, Juliet was taking medicines for heart disease for the past one year. He said that when he was in America, he came to know about this surgery 2 years ago at Colorado State University. The dog was discharged a day after the surgery considering its medical condition."text-align: justify;">According to Dr Sharma, TEER works completely on a special process. In this, surgery is done in the beating heart under trans-oesophageal 4D echocardiography and fluoroscopy. A small incision is made on the chest to perform the operation. After which two pipes are inserted inside through a catheter. This is done to reduce the leakage in the valve. Also, the diseased mitral valve is joined together.
