What is opium?
Opium is a globally discussed narcotic. Morphine, latex, codeine and pananthrine are powerful alkaloids made from its seeds. Heroin drug is also considered to be its source. Its price is decided on the basis of the quality of the crop. Generally it ranges from 8,000 to 1,00,000 per kg. However, when sold in bundles, its price reaches lakhs of rupees.

The length of the poppy plant is 3 to 4 feet. On growing up, they become lumpy on the top. It is a plant with green fibers and smooth skin. Opium leaves are long, stalkless and like hibiscus leaves. The flowers are white and blue in color and are bowl shaped. The color of opium is black. It tastes very bitter when tasted.
How much is produced in the country
Opium is cultivated in India. But for this, farmers have to take a license from the Central Bureau of Narcotics first. Only three states Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have issued licenses for opium cultivation. Presently, opium is being cultivated in Mandsaur, Neemuch of Madhya Pradesh, Kota, Jhalawar, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara and Pratapgarh of Rajasthan and Lucknow and Barabanki of Uttar Pradesh. Here the area under cultivation is fixed at 5,500 hectares.

No farmer can cultivate opium without a license. Laws have been made for this. Under Section 8 of the NDPS Act, 1985, farmers have to obtain a license from the Central Narcotics Bureau. Many clauses have been given in the act. Farmers have to follow those clauses in any situation. This crop is sown between October and November.

In many countries of the world, there is a provision of death penalty for selling smack, heroin, brown sugar and other drugs prepared from opium. Laws are strict in Arab countries regarding this. In our country, different punishments are given under the NDPS Act 1985. In this, there is a provision of one year’s imprisonment under section 15, 10 years’ punishment under section 24 and fine from one lakh to two lakh rupees and death penalty under section 31A.
