But research has shown that the metals condensed in the nodules separate electrical charges similar to a battery, producing enough energy to split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. Scientists have called this phenomenon "Dark Oxygen" This discovery raises questions about the possibility of similar processes on other planets and moons, such as Jupiter’s Europa or Saturn’s Enceladus.
