Her father used to drive a rickshaw, there was a problem of food and drink in the house, but she was fond of archery. She used to aim at mangoes hanging on the tree with a stone and had a hope in her mind that one day she would bring an Olympic medal for the country. This is the story of Deepika Kumari, born in a small village of Jharkhand, whose journey to reach the Olympics is like a dream. Her journey which started by playing with bamboo arrows and bow, today ranks her among the best archers in the world. She has gone to represent India in the Paris Olympics.
Born in the house of an auto-rickshaw driver, it was very difficult for Deepika to arrange archery equipment. Despite this, she never gave up on her dreams. She honed her talent by practicing with equipment made of bamboo. Deepika won many medals for India in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. She also represented India many times in the World Cup and won many medals. Her success gave a new identity to archery in India.
Deepika Kumari has played three Olympics so far. However, she has not yet won an Olympic medal. The responsibility of getting India its first archery medal in the Olympics rests on Deepika’s shoulders. Deepika Kumari is not just an archer but an inspiration for millions of youth. Deepika received her first formal archery training at the Tata Archery Academy in 2006. Deepika Kumari won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2010 Asian Games. In 2011, she won four silver medals at the World Cup. In 2012, she won a gold medal at the World Cup in Turkey. She was to participate in the 2012 London Olympics as the top archer. Even after this, she equaled many records.
