The group had on its social media platforms called for people to gather at the square for a peaceful protest.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez said a few dozen protesters were responsible for the violence, which resulted in 11 arrests and about 30 minor injuries. As soon as some protesters left the square, they threw projectiles at the police. To which the police responded with tear gas. Clashes continued for about two hours before the protesters dispersed.
