In ancient times, a king named Suketuman ruled in Bhadravati city. He had no children. His wife’s name was Shaivya. There was a great worry in the mind of that sonless king as to who would give Pind Daan to him and his ancestors after him. Without a son, one cannot owe debt to the ancestors and gods. In this way the king used to worry about this day and night.
Due to this worry, one day he became so sad that he felt like giving up his body, but he started thinking that committing suicide is a great sin, so he removed this thought from his mind. One day he rode a horse and went to the forest. The king moved forward in search of water.
After going some distance he found a lake. After paying obeisance to the sages sitting on the bank of the lake, he sat in front of them. Rishivar said – ‘O King! We are very happy with you. Whatever you wish, tell us. The king asked – ‘O Wipro! Who are you? And why are you staying here?
The sage said – ‘King! Today is Putrada Ekadashi, which grants a great son to those who wish to have a son. Magh Snan is five days from today and we all have come to take bath in this lake. Listening to the sages, the king said – ‘O sages! I also do not have a son, if you are happy with me then please bless me with a son.
The sage said – ‘O king! Today is Putrada Ekadashi. You fast on this. By the grace of Lord Shri Hari, you will definitely have a son. The king fasted that day as per the words of the sage and broke the fast on Dwadashi and after paying obeisance to the sages, returned back to his city.
By the grace of Lord Shri Hari, the queen conceived after a few days and after nine months a brilliant son was born to her. When this prince grew up, he became very brave, wealthy, famous and a protector of the people.” O Shri Hari, just as a childless couple got the happiness of having a child, in the same way, may every living being in the world get the good fortune of becoming parents.
How to observe Ekadashi fast
Ekadashi fast is observed from sunrise to sunrise the next day. He is also kept fasting or fasting. Night vigil is observed during this fast. Sri Hari is pleased with this.
