Phone Will Detect Earthquakes On Early Earthquake Warning System

Earthquake Alert On Phone: Large buildings collapse in a few minutes due to an earthquake. Earthquake is a sudden event, in which people do not even get time to secure themselves. How nice it would be if your phone could alert you before an earthquake… Yes, it is possible. Actually, Google is developing an early warning system, which will alert people shortly before the earthquake. This would give them enough time to protect themselves, enough early warning to slow down trains, stop planes from taking off or landing, and prevent cars from entering bridges or tunnels. Let us know what is this system.

Google working on earthquake alert system

Actually, Google is developing a special app that works on the Earthquake Early Warning System, named ShakeAlert. When an earthquake of the right intensity occurs, it can send an alert to your phone in advance that an earthquake is about to occur. Also, on the basis of this data, it can also tell how many magnitude tremors you can feel. This app does not predict earthquakes, rather it tells you that the earth is vibrating and an earthquake is about to occur.

ShakeAlert App

In fact, on October 5, 2022, an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred in the Bay Area of California. The special thing was that people had already got information about it. Google launched the ShakeAlert app for Android phones in August 2020 itself. Initially it relied only on a network of 700 seismometers in California. A seismometer is a device that detects the tremors of an earthquake. These seismometers were installed by geologists from the USGS, the California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley, and the state government.

How to detect earthquake

It uses data from two sources. Most smartphones running Google’s Android operating system have on-board accelerometers, which detect the movement of the phone. Some sensors of the phone can also work like mini seismometers. In this way, by combining the data of thousands or millions of phones, the system detects whether an earthquake is happening or not, and if it is happening where? After this, it sends an alert to the phone in the area where seismic waves are likely to hit. Because

Service is available in more than 90 countries

The speed of the radio signal of the phone is much faster than the waves of the earthquake. That’s why the alert reaches before the start of tremors in the area away from the epicenter of the earthquake and people take care. The earthquake alert system is currently available in more than 90 countries. The company is still working on it and wants to develop the world’s largest earthquake alert system by making it available for smartphones around the world.
