As soon as he reached Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed PM Modi warmly. During this, both the leaders were seen hugging each other and talking with their hands on each other’s shoulders, but as soon as PM Modi left Ukraine for his return, Zelensky said some things that made India uncomfortable.
According to the BBC report, on August 23, Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to Indian journalists in a press conference. In this, Zelensky said that he had asked PM Modi to hold a global peace conference in India because India is a big country and the largest democracy. Zelensky further said that but we cannot ask for a peace conference in a country which did not participate in the joint statement issued in the first peace conference.
Volodymyr Zelensky was talking about the conference held in Switzerland for peace in Ukraine, in which India had distanced itself from the joint statement. Foreign Ministry Secretary (West) Pawan Kapoor attended the conference from India’s side. On buying oil from Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky said that if India does not buy oil from Russia, it will have to face many challenges. However, Zelensky also said here that India should change its attitude towards Russia, if it does so, the war will stop. He said that many countries have stopped imports from Russia but India has not.
Meanwhile, when Zelensky was asked questions about India and China, he said, ‘If Vladimir Putin’s actions can be justified, then I am sure that its consequences will be seen in other parts of the world as well in the form of violation of border rules.’
Regarding India’s stance of keeping distance from the resolutions brought in the United Nations regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Zelensky said that he is not happy with this. He said that now we have to talk before the proposals because this is not the time to go into the past. He said that he wants India to stand with Ukraine.
