Maldives Parliamentary Election 2024: After the voting for the parliamentary elections in Maldives, the counting of votes is now going on. Along with India, China is also keeping an eye on this election due to the sourness in relations with Maldives. According to news agency PTI, the People’s National Congress (PNC) led by President Mohammed Muizzu is moving towards victory in the parliamentary elections in Maldives.
Muijju’s party won 66 seats
According to the report of Hindustan Times, the Election Commission of Maldives said that the results of 86 seats out of 93 have been declared, out of which President Muizzu’s PNC party won 66 seats. This figure is more than the majority, due to which Muizzu’s party can form the government again in Maldives.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which had adopted an India First policy before losing the presidential election last year, was leading on just 15 seats. If President Muizzu’s party forms the government, India’s relations with the Indian Ocean may be affected.
2 lakh 84 thousand people cast their vote
Apart from this, Maldives Development Alliance, Jamhoori Party and independent candidates together are leading on a total of seven seats, which shows that PNC will comfortably cross the majority mark in the Parliament. A total of 2 lakh 84 thousand people voted on 93 parliamentary seats to elect the government in Maldives.
During the election campaign, PNC had appealed to the voters to win more seats than the majority, so that Muizzu’s government could quickly fulfill its promise. PNC’s election promise also included sending back Indian military personnel deployed in Maldives to operate two helicopters and one aircraft.
India-Maldives relations
After coming to power last year, President Muizzu had soured Maldives’ relations with India. Maldives has taken several steps to reduce its dependence on India for food security and health care, including signing agreements with Turkey and other countries for the supply of food items and pharmaceutical products.
