The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court has heard the petition filed on the citizenship of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. During this time, the court has given time to the Union Home Ministry to file its reply on 24 March 2025. Let us tell you that the petitioner has written to Rahul Gandhi. It has been claimed that Rahul Gandhi has citizenship of two countries. Earlier, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had also filed a similar petition in the Delhi High Court regarding Gandhi’s citizenship. Subramanian Swamy had written in a letter that a company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in 2003, of which Rahul Gandhi was the director and secretary. He further alleged that in the company’s annual returns filed in 2005 and 2006, Rahul Gandhi’s date of birth was stated as June 19, 1970 and his nationality was stated as British.
What does Indian law say?
According to Article 9 of the Indian Constitution, no person can simultaneously hold Indian and any other country’s citizenship. Let us tell you that in India only single citizenship is given to a person. It is noteworthy that on April 20, 2019, a notice was sent to Gandhi by the Central Government on the subject of complaint related to citizenship.
Rahul Gandhi will have to give up Indian citizenship
