In mythological times, a king named Muchukund ruled. Indra, Varun, Kuber, Vibhishana etc. were his friends. He was a very truthful and devotee of Vishnu. He had a daughter named Chandrabhaga, whom he married to Sobhan, son of King Chandrasen. That king used to observe Ekadashi fast very strictly and everyone in his kingdom strictly followed this rule.
Once upon a time, Sobhan had come to his in-laws’ house. That was the month of Kartik. Mahapunyadayini Rama Ekadashi came in the same month. Everyone kept fast on this day. Chandrabhaga thought that my husband has a very weak heart, how will he fast on Ekadashi, whereas everyone is allowed to fast at his father’s place. What Chandrabhaga feared happened. The king issued orders that everyone should fast on Ekadashi as per the rules.
When Dashami came, trumpets were played in the kingdom, hearing it, Sobhan went to his wife and said – ‘O dear! Please tell me some solutions, because I cannot fast, if I fast I will definitely die. Hearing her husband’s words, Chandrabhaga said – ‘O Swami! In my father’s kingdom no one can eat food on the day of Ekadashi. Even elephants, horses, camels, animals etc. do not accept grass, grains, water etc., then how can humans eat?
If you cannot fast then go to some other place, because if you stay here you will definitely have to fast. Listening to his wife, Sobhan said – O dear, your opinion is right, but I will not go to any other place due to the fear of fasting, now I will definitely keep the fast, no matter what the result may be.
Sobhan also observed fast on Ekadashi and started feeling extremely distressed due to hunger and thirst. Sobhan died the whole day before sunrise due to hunger and thirst. The king told his daughter to have faith in the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Chandrabhaga did not perform Sati as per her father’s orders. She started fasting on Ekadashi while staying at her father’s house.
On the other hand, due to the effect of Rama Ekadashi fast, Shobhan attained a beautiful Devnagar on the peak of Mandarachal mountain. All the means of opulence were available there. The Gandharvas used to praise him and the Apsaras were engaged in his service. One day when King Muchukund came to Mandarachal mountain, he saw the splendor of his son-in-law.
When he came back to his city and told the whole story to Chandrabhaga, she was very happy. She went to her husband and started living happily with Shobhan due to her devotion and the influence of Rama Ekadashi.
