Lalita Pawar not only gained popularity with the character of Manthara in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, but she also gained a lot of popularity by playing the role of an evil mother-in-law in more than 700 Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati films. He also worked in many successful serials and films like ‘Shree 420’, ‘Dahej’, ‘Netaji Palkar’ and ‘Anaadi’. Everyone knows about the professional life of this late actress, but very few people know how painful her personal life was.

Lalita Pawar was born on April 18, 1916 in a prosperous silk merchant family. Her name at birth was Amba Laxman Rao, which was later changed to Lalita. Lalita was fond of acting and started acting at the age of just 9 and her first film was directed by director Y.D. Sarpotdar’s king was Harishchandra. After starting at such a young age, he worked in the entertainment industry till 1988.

An incident changed Lalita Pawar’s life.
Lalita Pawar’s career was going well and she was gaining popularity but an accident on the set changed her life forever. It was the year 1942, when during the shooting of her film ‘Jang-e-Azadi’, for a scene, her co-actor Bhagwan Dada had to slap her and he slapped Lalita so hard that Blood started flowing from his ear and a vein near his eye was burst. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but due to wrong treatment his case worsened and the right side of his body became paralyzed for a few years. She had been undergoing treatment for about 3 years. Because of this his career was greatly affected.

While talking to Cineplot.com, the late actress had said, “Due to an unfortunate incident during the shooting of Jang-e-Azadi, my career as a lead actress came to a sudden end. According to the scene, Master Bhagwan was supposed to slap me on my face and when he did so, it was so hard that I got paralysis on my face. My left eye was permanently damaged.”

After the accident, Lalita got popularity in the role of cruel mother-in-law.
Initially, Lalita was offered lead heroine roles but, after the accident and treatment, she started being offered character roles. Instead of giving up, Lalita took advantage of every opportunity she got and made a strong comeback by working as a supporting character in many films. During this phase, she got several roles as a cruel mother-in-law, which gave her a villainous image. Then she started getting negative roles, due to which she got the role of Manthara in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, which is a benchmark character even today.

Sister had become Lalita Pawar’s step-daughter.
Despite adverse circumstances, Lalita kept a hold on her career, however, her personal life started slipping out of her hands. Despite climbing the ladder of success in her career, she was betrayed in her personal life by none other than her younger sister. It was the mid-1930s when Lalita Pawar married film producer Ganpatrao Pawar. Everything was going well between them and she even worked in his films, however, later Lalita came to know about her husband’s extra marital affair. Lalita’s husband was having an affair with her younger sister due to which she had to end her married life. Lalita later married another film producer, Raj Kumar Gupta, and they also have a child named Jai Pawar, who is a film producer.

Talking about his second marriage, in an interview given to a journalist in 1998, he had said, ‘We had gone to Delhi-Agra for holidays. My husband has always been a romantic person. Even with the passage of time and living with us, there was no change in him.

Lalita Pawar died in agony alone.
Lalita’s troubles did not end here. After her second marriage, Lalita learned that she was suffering from oral cancer and moved to Pune. The veteran actress then started believing that she was bullied because of the negative characters she played and had developed cancer. On 24 February 1998, Lalita breathed her last in her bungalow in Pune. At that time she was completely alone because her family was not with her. When her son called them and no one picked up the phone, the family reached their Pune residence, where they learned that Lalita had breathed her last just three days earlier!
