Many times you neither know nor know that you are secretly going to create history. That too when everything is against you. One such story is of the director who gave one of the greatest films in Bollywood. Director Ramesh Sippy. The director who gave a gem to Bollywood. The name of this gem is ‘Sholay’.
What this film did is history. The film is also current because even today Sholay is like an institution for all those interested in films, those who direct films and those who act in films. Ramesh Sippy, born on 23 January in today’s Karachi, Pakistan, a little before independence, made Sholay and the more you talk about what happened next, the less it is.
When it was released it was declared a flop
The film was released in the year 1975. When the film was released, it remained in cold storage for the first 4 days. From critics to the audience, everyone started criticizing it. Some may not like the songs and some may like Gabbar’s voice, but something wonderful cannot be kept on screen for long. When the film gradually gained momentum due to word of mouth, it continued running from weeks to months and from months to years. Recently, director Rohit Shetty also talked about this on Indian Express.
About Amitabh’s character
During this, Rohit Shetty also said why only Amitabh’s character was killed. He said that when he was cast in the film, he was not that big a hero at that time. Except for one or two scenes, there was no scene in which he was seen alone. He was seen with Dharmendra in every scene. However, by then Amitabh’s Zanjeer and Deewaar had been released and he had become a big star.
Ramesh Sippy had done these films before Sholay
Before Sholay, Ramesh Sippy had debuted as a child artist at the age of 6 with the film Shahenshah. But his first film came in 1971, 4 years before Sholay, which was named ‘Andaz’. Apart from making films like Sholay, Ramesh Sippy has made different types of films. Ramesh Sippy later also made excellent films like Shaan, Akela and Shakti.
More interesting things related to Sholay
When Ramesh Sippy was going to make Sholay, he was short of budget. When his father went to GP Sippy, he decided to invest money in the film. Then that film was made for about Rs 3 crores. If this budget is calculated according to today’s inflation rate, then its price reaches hundreds of crores. At that time Sholay had earned around Rs 35 crores. That means this film, which earned 12 times the total budget, is still one of the highest grossing films in Bollywood.
