Solar Eclipse 2024: There are many such astronomical events in the world which astonish humans. Something similar happened in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which people were surprised to see. Earlier this week, a bright comet was seen in the desert of Abu Dhabi. According to astronomy experts, if the residents here look in the right direction after sunset, they will also be able to catch it.
A photo was taken by Al Khatt Astronomical Observatory on March 27. It is a ball of fire, it has two horn-like shapes, hence it is also called Devil’s Comet.
Will be near Earth on June 2
According to the International Astronomy Center (IAC), this comet will reach its closest point to the Sun on 21 April 2024 and it will be closest to the Earth on 2 June 2024. NASA said that there is a high possibility of it being visible when a total solar eclipse occurs on April 8, 2024.
This recurring comet, discovered in the year 1812, revolves around the Sun once every 71 years. It is officially known as 12P/Ponce-Brookes and was last seen from Earth in 1954.
It is expected that as it gets closer to the Sun, it will become brighter. According to the IAC, as the day passes, its altitude decreases and by the end of April it becomes difficult to see.”
How to watch it in UAE
Look towards the west about 45 minutes after sunset. The comet will be at an altitude of about 15 degrees above the area where the Sun sets. Use a smart app that maps the sky and determines the comet’s location among the stars.
It can be seen directly with the eyes without any special arrangement, although it would be best to use a telescope. This comet will look blurry at first, but if it is seen from a dark place then it will be clearly visible.
Comets are like snowballs made of dust, rock and ice. “As they orbit closer to the Sun, they heat up and turn into giant blobs of gas and dust that can be larger than a planet,” NASA said.
