After the ban on some Indian kitchen spices by Hong Kong and Singapore, an investigation campaign has been launched in the state also. Australia has also started investigating spices. Considering the seriousness, samples will be seized from the factories of all small and big kitchen spice manufacturers of UP. The Food Commissioner has given instructions for investigation in every district. All the samples will be tested from various labs in the country. These spices will be specifically tested for the deadly ethylene oxide pesticide. The report will be sent to FSSAI. The kitchen spices industry in UP is worth more than Rs 10 thousand crores.

Ethylene oxide is used as a food stabilizer in spices. If it is consumed excessively for a long time, there is a risk of fatal diseases like cancer. Uttar Pradesh is a big center of branding and trading of kitchen spices. More than 40 big and small brands are leaving UP alone. The Department of Food and Drug Administration believes that if the quality of the products of leading Indian brands is doubtful, then doubts have also arisen about the spices available in the Indian market.

To overcome this, the department has given instructions to check the quality of all kitchen spices in all 80 districts of the state. This is being run on a war footing so that lab tests can be conducted and reports can be obtained as soon as possible. The future of spices will be decided on the basis of this report only. Especially cities like Kanpur, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Noida, Hathras, Hapur, Agra, Meerut, Prayagraj etc. will be specially investigated because more than 80 percent of the brands manufactured in UP are from these cities.

India is the world’s largest spice producer and exporter. The International Organization for Standardization has listed 109 varieties of spices. Out of this, about 75% is produced here. Questions being raised on the quality of Indian spices have put the entire spice industry in trouble.

Anita Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of Food and Drug Administration, says that the issue of ban by some countries after the detection of deadly chemicals in kitchen spices is a serious matter. Keeping in view the health safety of the common people, instructions have been given to collect samples of kitchen spices in the entire state. These samples will be tested in NABL laboratories, the report of which will be sent to FSSAI. Action will be taken only on the basis of the report.
