‘Love Hostel’ Movie Review: It is said that a director can be easily made from a film writer or rather it is a straight path. Some say that film editors also make good directors. There is also a view that after years of experience, a cinematographer must become a director, because almost half of a film is made in the mind of the cinematographer. Shankar Raman, cinematographer of films as diverse and diverse as Peepli Live, Rocky Handsome, Mukkabaaz and Laal Kaptaan, decided to turn director in 2006.

His first film was Gurgaon which was the story of family feud of a land mafia of Gurgaon and the crimes and murders born out of it. This film got a lot of praise. Apart from this, Shankar has also won the National Award for cinematography and after a few years for the screenplay. Shankar had also directed some episodes of Netflix’s series ‘Leela’. His second feature film ‘Love Hostel’ has recently been released on Zee5. The film is based on “honour killing”, although the interest in the film is hardly aroused due to the fact that the story is not new.

Ashu Shokeen aka Shokeen Ahmed (Vikrant Massey) and Jyoti Dilawar (Sanya Malhotra) intend to run away from home and get married. Jyoti’s mother, grandmother, brother and the villagers awaken the Jat in them when Jyoti runs away from home. Here Ashu and Jyoti reach the court, with the help of their teacher Nidhi Dahiya (Aditi Vasudev) and lawyer Khanna, start the process of registering the marriage in the court and also demand their protection from the court, then under special permission Ashu and Jyoti is sent to a police safe home where other couples applying for inter-caste marriages like them are kept under police protection.

At the behest of Jyoti’s grandmother, a hitman or rather contract killer of Khap Panchayat, Viraj Singh Dagar (Bobby Deol) is sent to find and kill her. Viraj manages to find them, but Ashu and Jyoti keep dodging him for a long time and go and hide at their teacher Nidhi Dahiya’s house. Jyoti’s family members kill Ashu and Viraj shoots Jyoti. Going forward, Viraj is hit by a loading tempo on the side of the road and he too dies.

The basic idea of the story of Love Hostel is of Kunal Sharma. Mehak Jamal and Yogi Singha have written the screenplay along with director Shankar Raman. Yogi Singha has written the dialogues of this film, so authentic Haryanvi has been spoken in the film. People can be impressed by the story but there is nothing new in this film except the scenes of “Love Hostel”. Things like Khap Panchayat, honor killing, Haryanvi background, mindlessness, patriarchal society since childhood, low status of girls in the house, gun in every house etc. are very common and have been seen in many films.

Anushka Sharma’s NH 10 has become a very real film on honor killing. Love Hostel doesn’t have the audacity of Gurgaon. Every scene of the film Gurgaon hits the brain like a hammer, but this thing has not come to the fore in Love Hostel. Yogi Singha and Shankar had written Gurgaon, so better was expected from them. The good thing about the story is that the story is in continuous flow. There is no shock. Every scene is thoughtfully written. There is harmony between the scenes and not a single character is redundant, even comedy is not done just to make you laugh. Seeing the character of Inspector Chaudhary (Siddharth Bharadwaj), in charge of Safe Home, it seems that he will be a comic villain, but the bitterness of his tongue also works wonders.

Vikrant Massey and Sanya Malhotra’s scenes are good. Chemistry is visible but the number of scenes seems less. Bobby Deol is scared. After changes were made in the script for Bobby, he accepted this negative role. He seems so convinced about honor killing in his mind that he does not even listen to his daughter’s plea and he shoots her student Sanya Malhotra right in front of her in a reckless manner. Bobby’s character had a lot of scope for excellent acting and Bobby redeemed it. He has some scenes with a limping dog which are wonderful.

In the last scene, the dog sniffing Bobby’s dead body and then walking away from there to freedom is wonderful. The character of DCP Sushil Rathi (Raj Arjun) has been crafted very well. The helplessness of the police, the inability of the police to do anything in the honor killings of the villagers, and Vikrant Massey, who was facing charges of being a terrorist in jail, instead of getting Vikrant to turn informer and still not being able to help him, did all this very easily. Played from Rest of the characters are also effective. The characters of Akshay Oberoi, Simran Rawal, and Yogesh Tiwari are small but very important.

The music had scope but Clinton Cerejo and Bianca Gomez’s songs “Bas Mein Nahi” and Jeet Ganguly’s “Chali Aa”, despite having good compositions, do not have the elements to be popular. Cinematographer Vivek Shah of the film Gurgaon and Amazon’s famous web series “Inside Edge” has used a beautiful color palette. Shankar himself is an award winning cinematographer so it is necessary to expect the magic of camera in his film. Vivek has created that magic. Vivek has used excellent shots and camera angles with a light dusty color like cowboy films. Gully Boy and recently released ’83 film editor Nitin Baid has done the final edit of the film while the first edit has been done by Shaan Mohammed (Wake Up Sid, Kalakandi and Gurgaon). Because of Nitin, the film looks very tight.

The story of Love Hostel is old, and the film also seems to have been seen many times, but the film is short, so watching it in a meeting, we can see the bad effects of “honour killing”, we can discuss it. Everyone’s acting is good so you will not get bored.
