Review: It often happens that the films whose promos are very good, the film turns out to be as weak as the depths. ‘A Thursday’ turned out to be just the opposite. For the last few days, the promos of the film ‘A Thursday’ were being shown on Disney+ Hotstar and the promo itself raised a lot of curiosity about the film. Not only were the promos awesome, the movie is even better than that. Seeing the film, one gets confidence in Yami Gautam Dhar’s acting ability and it seems that maybe he should get more work. He has run the entire film single-handedly and has given such a wonderful color to his character that even after watching the film, the impression of his acting remains on the heart and mind for many hours.
From the name and the promo, it seemed that this film would be a film similar to Neeraj Pandey’s film ‘A Wednesday’ (Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher) and believe me, this film runs on the same lines and struggles with a problem that Many laws and many legal changes have been brought in the country regarding this, but even today that problem is standing up in a frightening form. Naina Jaiswal (Yami) has played the role of a playschool teacher who takes her own school children hostage in the school and calls the police to inform about it. Police officer Catherine (Neha Dhupia) reaches the spot. Naina’s first condition is to call police officer Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni) so that negotiations can be done. Atul is Neha’s ex-husband as well as her subordinate. According to Yami’s demands, if any of her conditions are not accepted, she will kill the children one by one. Unfortunately, in this episode, the driver of a girl child and the nanny of the school also become hostages. This game, which starts with depositing Rs 5 crore in his bank account, ends with a face-to-face meeting with the Prime Minister (Dimple Kapadia). Why does Yami do this, what is Atul’s role in this episode and whether the children get out safely, this is the suspense of the film.
Yami Gautam raised a lot of expectations from her first Hindi film Vicky Donor, then she worked in South Indian films and except for her ability in Hindi films, no film went special or her work did not get any notice. Yami dominates the entire screen in ‘A Thursday’ and she has given a wonderful performance. She has become a girl of today’s world, so she knows and uses things like mobile hotspot, WhatsApp, ring light etc. Yami is naturally beautiful so she cannot distort her face even if she wants to. This fact has been taken advantage of in this film and the expressions raised on his face have been used in the right way. She scares, intimidates and completely shakes the rest of the characters with a very restrained tone and calm mind. Atul Kulkarni is a very fun-loving person in his personal life, but in this film he has played a very serious role. Everyone continues to hate Atul till the climax of the film, but Atul turns the tide at the last moment. The special thing is that he has not shown this game-changing incident with any dialogue or any heavy scene. Neha Dhupia was pregnant during the making of the film and she has shown herself pregnant in the film as well. The role is small but she has described well the compulsions of a female officer in the police force. The roles of Dimple Kapadia and Karanveer Sharma are important, small and did not have much to do, so they were played well.
His writing is responsible for the success of the film. The film is written by director Behzad Khambata and Ashley Lobo. Writing a film is like giving birth to a child. The process is very difficult, every day a new experience is added, every time a new lesson is added and every scene has to be rewritten again and again. In the process of making the screenplay of every story, redrafting has to be done many times. From creating suspense in the beginning to opening the suspense and taking the story to its destination, the writers have to make many papads. ‘A Thursday’ is one such script. Very tight There is not a single scene that the audience has to feel uncomfortable while watching, while the problem on which this film is made is a very disgusting act.
Director Behzad has been working in the film industry for a long time. This is his second film. His first film was ‘Blank’ (Sunny Deol) which was the story of a terrorist. Blank didn’t work but Behzad was praised. Behzad should be considered one of the best directors after ‘A Thursday’. Behzad has worked hard to Indianize foreign concepts like police drama, hostage drama. He is supported by Editor Sumit Kotian. Sumeet has also edited the famous and successful web series ‘The Family Man’ (Manoj Bajpayee). The pace of the story has remained constant throughout. Cinematography is by Anuj Rakesh Dhawan and Siddharth Vasani. The rain scenes are well done and the flashback has also been shot in a very unique way. There was no scope for songs in the film but Kaizad’s music could have been better. An attempt has been made to test the music of European feel in the Indian film, but because of that the effect of many scenes has reduced, especially the climax.
There are some shortcomings in the film like Neha Dhupia’s character which could probably have been removed. Atul Kulkarni is seen smoking cigarettes all the time. Attempts to show the dirty face of television news have been made in many films before and will continue to happen in the future as well. Viewers no longer care about the reality of television news, distorting the truth for TRP battles, prime time hosting battles, etc. This also seems like an unnecessary part of the film. The parents of the children are seen in very few scenes, what is affecting their state of mind due to this crisis or what they are doing; These things have been shown very superficially. Despite all this the film is good, worth watching. The last scene of the film keeps playing on the mind for a long time. Must see.
