Rajiv Gandhi National Law University Controversy: The ongoing ruckus between the Vice Chancellor and the students at Rajiv Gandhi National Law University in Punjab is not subsiding. 52 hours after the incident, the state government has intervened in the matter. Punjab Higher Education Minister Harjot Bains has summoned a report from the university registrar and has assured the students that justice will be done to them. Amidst the assurances being given to the students by the Punjab government, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has called this incident shameful. She has also appealed to the Women’s Commission to intervene in the matter.
Violation of girls’ privacy is unacceptable
Priyanka Gandhi wrote on social media, “It is extremely shameful that the Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Law University, Patiala, suddenly entered the rooms of the girl students without informing them and checked them and made indecent comments on their dress. What the girl students have said to the media is extremely objectionable. Girls are capable of deciding their food, dress and choice of course. Moral policing and violation of privacy of girls by misusing the rights is unacceptable.”
He further wrote, “The Women’s Commission should take cognizance of this matter and strict action should be taken against the Vice Chancellor.” The leader’s tweet has received many supportive responses.
What is the matter?
On the afternoon of Sunday, 22 September 2024, the Vice Chancellor of the University suddenly started checking the girls’ hostel. The students allege that there was no female staff with them at the time of checking. Along with this, the students alleged that the VC entered their room without informing them, which is a violation of their right to privacy. According to the allegation, the Chancellor also commented on their short clothes.
The Vice Chancellor in his clarification said that he started the surprise checking because he had received complaints from some girl students that some girls drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes after midnight in the girls’ hostel.
