Delhi’s Saket Court has sentenced Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Medha Patkar to five months simple imprisonment. This sentence has been given to her in a defamation case filed by the then KVIC Chairman VK Saxena (now Lieutenant Governor of Delhi). The court has also directed Medha Patkar to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to VK Saxena.

The Saket court also said that Medha Patkar is not being given more punishment considering her age and health problems. The judge said that the sentence will be stayed for 30 days.

Meanwhile, Medha Patkar says, “Truth can never be defeated…we have not tried to defame anyone. We just do our work…we will challenge the court’s decision.”
