Saptarishi Story: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the country’s Union Budget on 1 February. While presenting the budget, the Finance Minister also mentioned Saptarishi. Who are the Saptarishis?

In ancient times there was a group of seven sages called Saptarishi. These rishis had the responsibility of maintaining the balance in the universe and showing the right path to mankind. It is believed that the Saptarishis are still engaged in their work. A constellation visible in the night sky has also been given the noun of Saptarishi constellation. The seven sages whose names are mentioned in the Vedas are Rishi Kashyap, Atri Rishi, Bharadwaj Rishi, Vishwamitra Rishi, Gautam Rishi, Jamdagni Rishi and Vashishtha Rishi. In the Vedas, these seven sages have been considered as the protectors of Vedic religion.

Kashyap Rishi had 17 wives. All the deities are believed to have originated from his wife named Aditi and the demons from his wife named Diti. It is believed that different living beings originated from the remaining wives as well. The other sage is Atri. According to Puranas, in Tretayuga, Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita stayed in the hermitage of sage Atri, whose wife was Anasuya Mata, during their exile. His son is Lord Dattatreya. The third sage is Bhardwaj who composed many texts including Ayurveda. His son was Dronacharya. The fourth sage is Vishwamitra who composed the Gayatri Mantra.

The fifth sage is Gautam whose wife was Ahilya. He cursed Ahalya and turned her into stone. By the grace of Lord Shri Ram, Ahilya regained her form. The sixth sage is Jamadagni whose son was Lord Parshuram. The seventh sage is Vashishtha. Sage Vasishtha was the teacher of the four sons of King Dasaratha, Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna.
