Markandeya Rishi’s name is also mentioned in religious texts for immortality in Hanuman ji, Ashwatthama, Vyas, Vibhishan etc. According to legend, Markandeya Rishi’s father’s name was Markandu Rishi. They didn’t have any children. Then he did penance to Lord Shiva along with his wife. Pleased with his penance, Shiva appeared and said, do you want a qualityless long life son or a quality short lived son whose age will be only 16 years. Then Markandu Rishi said that I want only a virtuous son. With the boon of Lord Shiva, Markandu got son Ratna.
But when Markandeya Rishi was about to turn 16, he came to know about his short life from his mother. Then father Markandu asked him to do penance to Lord Shiva for long life. It is said that in the month of Savan, Markandeya Rishi did severe penance. Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance and gave him the boon of immortality. Kaal Devta Yamraj also bowed down in front of Markandeya’s penance and Lord Shiva’s boon. Shiva is also called Mahakal because of delaying the death of Markandeya.
