Cyber fraudsters are coming up with new types of scams every day to prey on people. Their only effort is to somehow trap the common people. Some people become their victims knowingly or unknowingly. Now the Cyber Crime Wing of Tamil Nadu Police has alerted people about a new type of scam. This is being called ‘jumped deposit’ scam. Many complaints of such scams have been received on the National Cyber Crime Portal.
What is jumped deposit scam?
In this type of scam, the fraudster will first send some money to the victim through UPI. As soon as the money comes into the account, the victim will receive an SMS. People usually check their accounts as soon as such messages come. As soon as the victim goes to check his account, the fraudsters will request to withdraw money from his account. When the victim enters the PIN number in the mobile to view the account, the fraudsters’ request to withdraw money gets approved. In such a situation, fraudsters withdraw many times the amount of money sent.
Police said- people should be alert
Police have asked people to be alert from such SMS. Cyber Crime Wing has advised that people should not check their accounts immediately after receiving any such notification. They should wait for some time so that the request to withdraw money expires. Apart from this, any such request can be canceled even by entering the wrong PIN the first time. If anyone finds any suspicious transaction in his account then he should contact the bank.
Police officials said that many complaints regarding this scam are also being received on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. He has asked the victims of scams to immediately report such cases to the nearest cyber crime police station and portal so that action can be taken as soon as possible.
