According to The Sun report, 56-year-old Jeff Highfield had recently bought the house. He wanted to make this place his luxury office. Were getting cleaning done for this. Then that secret door appeared. As soon as we entered inside, we saw a tunnel which looked quite long. It was going in many directions. Small houses 5 feet high were built inside it. These houses were made with wooden windows, strong doors, shelves and even a place to keep candles. It looked as if these were army barracks. Jeff gathered courage and went inside and was surprised by what he saw.
Tunnels are spread throughout the city
When Jeff talked to local historians about this, he found out that these tunnels are 250 years old and are a small part of the tunnel network built throughout England. It leads to a river along the high street. Tunnels are spread throughout the city. People used to live in the cellars built in it. But as time passed, luxurious houses were built on top of it. Jeff said, we don’t want to seal them. Whatever lies below is priceless. We don’t want to cover it up. We have definitely installed some pumps because there is a river nearby and it gets flooded. If these are built properly, they will be a wonderful place.
Know why it was made
Local people say that these tunnels lead to pubs and other cellars around the city. Roads have been opened at many places, you can land anywhere. These are so clean that people are able to walk in them. Many claims are made about what these tunnels were used for. Some people say that old rich people used to use these roads to roam around. There is also a claim that they were used for smuggling. Because the path of tunnels leads towards the river and comes out of the river. All the tunnels will be approximately five and a half feet wide. People used to be so small 200 years ago.
