Tension in Manipur: Women of the Kuki-Jo community in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district clashed with security forces on Tuesday, escalating tension in the state again ahead of the New Year. The police said in a post on An attempt was made.
According to the police, the joint forces dispersed the crowd using mild force and now the situation is peaceful and under control. Police said security forces were deployed on the hill to control the area and prevent any untoward incident. Local people claimed that many people were injured in the use of force by security forces in Saibol village of Twitching. Twitching is located in the so-called buffer zone between the Kuki-controlled hills and the Meitei dominated Imphal Valley.
Security forces used tear gas
Local people said that the women had gathered to protest against the forcible occupation of the community bunkers by the security personnel. A leader of the Kuki community alleged that the situation worsened when security forces used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Jammed National Highway-2
One protester said, “It was like a battlefield. “We came to express our concerns, not to confront war strategy.” After the incident, Adivasi Ekta Samiti blocked National Highway-2 indefinitely and demanded withdrawal of central forces. Let us tell you that this National Highway is an important highway connecting this region with the rest of the country.
The committee spokesperson said, “Our people have suffered a lot. “The use of so much force on unarmed women is unacceptable.” Blocking of National Highway-2 will disrupt the supply of goods to the Meitei areas of Imphal Valley. The women’s wing of ITLF, a forum of tribal leaders, claimed that several women were injured in the use of force by the security personnel.
