Prayagraj. Revolutionary Bhagat Singh, known as Shaheed Azam, had a deep connection with Allahabad University. During the struggle for independence, he stayed here for one night in the Holland Hostel of the University. Here Bhagat Singh had also discussed many policies against the British with his colleagues. Room number eight of Holland Hall Hostel still holds the memories of Bhagat Singh. Even now if the university allots this room to any student, it is instructed and urged to maintain dignity here.
Comrade Ajay Ghosh’s famous book ‘Sansmritiyan’ has been living in this room number 8. In this, he has very well mentioned the incident of that night when Bhagat Singh knocked on the door of his room and requested him to stay here. According to Ajay Ghosh ‘One evening in the year 1928 a young man came to my room. When I saw him closely, I found that he was Bhagat Singh. Bhagat Singh came in and then the whole night we kept discussing new plans and before dawn both of them left for Kanpur to meet Chandrashekhar Azad.

There was a demand from MP Vinod Sonkar to change the name of Holland Hall Hostel, but the old students of the hostel objected. Sudhir Singh, secretary of Holland Hall Alumni Association, who is adamant on not allowing the name change at any cost, says that the memories of this hostel are also associated with Shaheed Azam Bhagat Singh, who used to come here during the freedom struggle. In many documents the name of this place is recorded with historicity. This name is associated with the heritage of this hostel. Tampering with it is not right.
