Several farmer leaders, including Saravan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallawal, who were returning after a meeting with the central delegation on Wednesday (March 19, 2025) in Chandigarh, were taken into custody in Mohali. Meanwhile, the Punjab Police started removing the protesting farmers on Shambhu and Khanouri border. The police removed the farmers who were protesting by uprooting the stage and tents. The border was closed for the last one year due to the farmers’ sit -in demonstrations.

Farmer leaders were detained
The police detained several farmer leaders, including Saravan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal. Farmer leader Gurmaneet Singh Mangat said, ‘Abhimanyu Kohar, Kaka Singh Kotra and Manjeet Singh Rai have also been detained.

Heavy police stationed at the protest site
A heavy police force has been deployed at Shambhu border and Khanouri border. Ambulances, buses, fire brigade vehicles have been deployed at the protest site. About 3,000 police personnel have been deployed under the leadership of Patiala Range DIG Mandeep Singh Sandhu.

Punjab Finance Minister defended action
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has justified the police action. He said, ‘The state’s economy was suffering a lot due to the border block. Both the highways are the lifeline of Punjab, due to which the industry and business have been very damaged. He further said, ‘Farmers should go to Delhi and demonstrate’.

Punjab government accused of cheating
Opposing the police action, the farmers have accused the AAP government of Punjab of cheating. Farmers say that the Punjab government has confused them. The government promised the conversation and asked to end the hunger strike. The farmers shouted slogans against the AAP government.

Congress and Akali Dal accused
Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wading accused the central and Punjab government of having a conspiracy against the farmers. He said, ‘Farmers were assured of talks but after the talks, the Punjab Police took the farmers into custody’. SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal fiercely targeted Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He claimed, ‘Bhagwant Mann has lost his mind balance. During the election, he promised that all the demands of the farmers will be met, but now they are cheating the farmers’.

SAD leaders raised questions on the intention of Punjab government
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema said, ‘It is undemocratic and illegal to take farmers into custody like this. He on this matter Bhagwant Maan Has asked to answer Daljit Singh Cheema said, ‘The Union Agriculture Minister himself has said that there will be a next meeting on May 4, so why the farmers were detained immediately after the meeting.

What did the SSP of Patiala say
Patiala SSP Nanak Singh said, ‘Police action has been taken peacefully. Farmers were performing on the Shambhu border for a long time. Today, under the supervision of the duty magistrate, the police has evacuated the area. Those who expressed their desire to go home have been sent to the bus. The police has not forcefully force the farmers, because there was no opposition from the front.

Next meeting will be held on May 4
Now the next meeting will be held on May 4 regarding the demands of farmers. During a conversation with news agency IANS, farmer leader Saravan Singh Pandher said, ‘There was a positive discussion in the meeting. In which the government presented its stand, while we put forward the concerns of the farmers.
