Shani Jayanti 2024: Shani Jayanti is celebrated on the new moon day of Jyeshtha month. According to Bhrigu Samhita, Shani has great determination power, hence in the horoscope, Shani works with determination power in the two places where he is the lord and where he is situated and the two places which he sees. Let us now see the story of Shani Dev’s birth.
Shani Dev Birth Story:–
According to Varaha Purana chapter number 20, Marichi Muni is the son of Brahma. Brahma himself had assumed fourteen forms (in the form of his sons). Marichi was the eldest among them. Marichi’s son was the great and radiant Kashyap Muni. He was the most prosperous among the Prajapatis, because he was the father of the gods. The twelve Adityas are his sons. It is said that these twelve Adityas are the radiant forms of Lord Narayana. Thus, these twelve Adityas are the symbols of twelve months and Samvatsara is the form of Lord Vishnu.
Martand is the most glorious among the twelve Adityas. Devshilpi Vishwakarma married his extremely radiant daughter Sanjna to Martand. They had two children, the son’s name was Yam and the daughter’s name was Yamuna. Sanjna was unable to bear the brightness of the Sun, so she took the form of a Vadaba (mare) with the speed of the mind and placed her shadow in the house of the Sun and went to Uttar-Kuru. Now her shadow started living there and the Sun God had two children from her too, the son became famous by the name Shani and the daughter became famous by the name Tapati.
When Chaya started behaving unfairly towards her children, the eyes of the Sun God turned red with anger. He said to Chaya- “It is not right for you to behave unfairly towards your children.” Even after Surya said this, when Chaya did not change her thoughts, one day Yamraj, very sad, said to his father- “She is not our mother, because she loves her two children- Shani and Tapati and has enmity towards us. She treats us unfairly like a step mother.”
At that time, hearing such words from Yama, Chaya was filled with anger and she cursed Yama- “You will soon become the king of ghosts.” When Surya heard such harsh words from Chaya, he wished for the welfare of his son and said- “Son! There is nothing to worry about- you will decide the dharma and sin of humans there and you will be respected in heaven as Lokpal.” On that occasion, Surya’s mind became restless due to his anger towards Chaya. So, he cursed Shani in return- “Son! Due to your mother’s fault, your eyes will also be full of cruelty.” At that very moment, he became crooked. On this, there is another story in Kalpa Bhed in Ganesha Purana.
Why can Saturn’s evil eye destroy anyone?
According to Ganesh Purana (3rd part 8th chapter), Shani narrated this story to Mata Parvati. Shani said: ‘Mateshwari! I have been a devotee of Lord Krishna since the beginning and my mind was always focused on the feet of the same Lord. Being detached from worldly pleasures, I became a complete ascetic. But that penance ended when I got married.’
Just then a friend interrupted and said, “It was natural for the penance to be disrupted after marriage. This is the condition of everyone, then what is special in what you say?”
Shani said- ‘There is a speciality, that is why I am saying this. Pay attention to that speciality also. I was married to the very beautiful and radiant daughter of Chitrarath. That Sati also used to remain continuously engaged in penance. Once when she had her period, she adorned herself with all the sixteen adornments. At that time she was adorned with divine ornaments and looked very beautiful. Both her beauty and adornment together worked like icing on the cake. At that time her beauty became so captivating that even the sages could be fascinated.’
‘When it was night, she came to me. I was engrossed in the meditation of Lord Krishna, so I did not even notice her arrival. But she was getting intoxicated, she said in a somewhat sharp voice – ‘Swami! Please look at me.’ But I did not pay any attention to her.
‘She was watching with her restless eyes, but my concentration could not be broken. When she saw that her attempt was unsuccessful, she became angry. Because her period was going waste. Even in anger, she tried her best to make me conscious.’
‘When she could not succeed in disturbing my attention then suddenly Kamavati said-
,I do not see you nor do I do any work for your protection. What you see is foolish! All are destroyed.”
‘Hey fool! You did not even look at me, because of this my period could not be protected, that is, my period is going waste. That is why now whoever you look at will definitely get destroyed.’
‘Her curse reached my ears and my concentration was disturbed. When I opened my eyes, I saw my wife standing there. She was looking very beautiful at that time. I started thinking, she is my wife, why did she curse me like this? Actually, it is my mistake that after getting married, I ignored my duty of satisfying my wife.’
Then I thought- ‘If I can satisfy you even now, then I can escape the curse.’ Firming up this thought, I tried to pacify her- ‘Devi! My beloved! I was engrossed in meditation. That is why I could not hear your plea, otherwise I would never have ignored you. Now I am ready to do whatever you command me.’
‘In this way I persuaded her many times and when she calmed down, I requested her to cancel the curse by giving her the desired thing. But now she did not have any such power left that she could cancel her curse. Due to the curse, her fidelity towards her husband had become weak. She had repented a lot and said that ‘I have committed a big mistake, I want the curse given by me to be canceled.’
‘But the curse was not destroyed. Thinking so, I do not look at anyone from that day onwards. Because I never know who might get harmed by looking at someone. I keep my head bowed all the time for the welfare of the people. That is why it is said that whoever is affected by the evil eye of Shani Dev is sure to be destroyed. By the way, Shani Dev is very rule-abiding and a supporter of justice. He is said to be scary but only for the sinners.
