The reach of social media and mobile phone cameras has almost ended the era of those stories which used to spread in villages and towns in the form of rumours decades ago and create a chill in the minds of people. Especially the terror of stories like Munhnochwa and Lakadsunghwa was so much in the villages of North India that in the 90s many children stayed away from the mango orchards in the afternoon and from the starry roofs at night.
However, today we will not talk about these rumoured stories. Rather, we will introduce you to a true horror story which kept not only Rajasthan but also many states of North India in terror for years.
Shankariya of Jaipur
The year was 1952. The people of India were celebrating the completion of their first democratic general elections. But in the same year, a child was born in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, who was going to become the cause of death for many people in the coming times. According to police records, Shankariya was born in 1952 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The world later came to know him as Kanpatimar.
From Shankariya to Kanpatimar…
It had been almost 21 years since the country’s general elections and Shankariya’s birth. The world was changing rapidly. Shankariya had also changed. Now he was no longer the innocent boy Shankariya of Jaipur, but had become Kanpatimar, the famous serial killer of Rajasthan. Several murders one after the other had made Kanpatimar a horror story.
People in Rajasthan and the neighbouring areas were afraid to go anywhere alone at night. However, Shankariya had not yet been officially declared a serial killer. But the story of a shadow had started circulating among the police and the common people that there was someone who was killing people in a predetermined manner without any reason.
70 murders and hanging
This was the decade of the 70s. People used to get information through newspapers or radio. The morning of 17 May 1979 was a different morning for Rajasthan and its surrounding states. People here got freedom from the shadow that was preventing them from going out at night. Actually, Kanpatimaar was hanged on 16 May 1979. Shankariya was only 27 years old at the time of hanging. According to India Today’s report, Shankariya had killed 70 people in his life.
Why did people call him Kanpatimaar
A serial killer has an identity. He kills each of his victims in the same way. It was the same in Shankariya’s case. He used a hammer to kill each person. Shankariya was named Kanpatimaar because he used to attack his victims with a hammer near their ears. In the 70s, many such bodies were found in Rajasthan, whose victims were killed by attacking them near the ears.
