It is told in Shiv Purana that, to please Lord Shiva, Parvati ji started severe penance by taking Panchakshar mantra from Naradji. This penance was so difficult that it was difficult even for the sages. Parvati spent years doing penance to please Lord Shiva and get her as her husband, but despite this, Lord Shiva did not appear. After this, Himachal, Mena, Meru and Mandrachal etc. came and explained to Parvati. At the same time, everyone considered it difficult to attain Shiva and asked them to return home.
But Parvati ji did not agree. She said, if Mahadev, who burnt Kamadeva to ashes in anger, is unhappy then I too will definitely satisfy him with my penance. All of you please return. Mahadev will definitely be satisfied with my penance. After everyone returned, Parvati ji’s determination, surrounded by her friends, had now become more real than before and she started doing more rigorous penance than before. Due to his penance, all the three worlds along with gods, demons, humans and living beings became unhappy.
