‘Shoorveer’ Review: Just as it is a crime to find innovation in the story of a sports biopic, similarly it is a crime to expect innovation in any web series made on the Army. Be it a film or a web series based on the story of the army, some elements are fixed in it. An officer who has lost his last mission, or whose conscience is burdened by a wrong decision. Suddenly such a crisis comes on the country from which only that officer is needed to avoid it. The government gives complete freedom to that officer that he can do whatever he wants but he has to save the country.
The officer also tries to find out such samples which save the country from the brink of destruction. A few Muslim soldiers are also kept in it so that they can cover the religious angle. Pakistan is often the enemy. Soldiers of the enemy country are often seen as stupid and without training because their job is to die from the bullets of Indian soldiers. If there is an air force, then there will be LOC and our soldiers will cross that border and execute the operation and will return alive. Only the survival of the hero is known at the very end. A very expensive show of Disney + Hotstar has been released on the story of this mood, which is called Shoorveer. The feeling of patriotism inspires to watch such series or films, but in the end, a good story is the key to the success of the series. The first season of Shoorveer has 8 episodes and watching them in full means being a Shoorveer.
From Shah Rukh Khan’s Fauji to the recently released Sony Liv, Abhrak 2, the case and formula has been similar. All the movies or web series that have come after the surgical strike, all seem like a government advertisement. Something similar happens in Shoorveer as well. India’s National Security Advisor Milind Phanse (Makarand Deshpande) presents a report of a terrorist attack by Pakistan to the Prime Minister, asking that Air Force Group Captain Ranjan Malik’s (Manish Chowdhary) proposal be allowed for Operation Hawk. The best soldiers from the Army, Airforce, Navy and Special Forces will be included in the Hawks and they will be made the country’s first response unit. The proposal is approved and different candidates start coming.
A disobedient pilot, his Muslim colleague, a commando, a helicopter pilot and a few other soldiers come together to form the Hawk group. The story after this is completely worth watching. A former Pakistan general (Arif Zakaria) wants to attack India and a Pakistani spy steals the codes of the missile system by breaking into India’s security. A stockpile of state-of-the-art and new fighter aircraft imported from abroad is given to the Hawk team, in which a technical glitch is caught. When the Hawk team sends their team to sabotage Pakistan’s plans, an airplane crashes and its pilot (who happens to be a Muslim) is caught. The surviving Hawk team shows courage and sabotages Pakistan’s plans, Arif Zakaria is killed and the prisoner of war pilot is rescued by the Indian Hawk team.
Everything is predictable except one fact. A lot of money has been spent in making this series. The very first sequence is of a fighter pilot saving a plane from crashing. Very nice opening sequence. Hope binds. You will remember many scenes and sequences from the English film “Top Gun”. But in the role of fighter pilot Viraj, Tom Cruise is not there but Armaan Ralhan (grandson of filmmaker OP Ralhan). Armaan seems to be a solid fighter pilot, he has a great personality and also manages to act properly. The problem is his role. In the second role, Adil Khan, the owner of a very attractive personality, whom we have already seen in Special Ops 1.5. His voice is also strong and his role is small but effective. The story of Shoorveer is written by Brijesh Jayaraman whose web series Abhrak has been released some time ago. Its screenplay is written by Sagar Pandya (Test Case) and dialogues are by Nisarg Mehta (Hostages, Color Bomb). Brijesh and Sagar have written web series on Army earlier also, so repetition can be clearly seen in their writing.
The backstory of the characters is also almost the same. It is always unfair to apologize to the author community for mistakes. Hawk teams are made in Shoorveer because there is no coordination between Army and Airforce but the entire Hawk team is mostly focused on the aeroplanes. There is no role of the Army and the Navy has no role at all. There is also an angle like Rang De Basanti in which he does not get along with the pilot’s father who is a defense contractor. Renowned actress Regina Cassandra has a backstory in which she wants to prove her late pilot boyfriend innocent in a plane crash case. A pilot has a younger daughter but does not have a wife, so she also has a romantic angle. The total deposit formula is so much that the viewers are cheated.
Tanvi Patil’s production design is so crude that the ground combat scenes look fake. In Prateek Deora’s cinematography, only the airplane shots are well taken. The seat ejection shot looks very fake. The cinematographer gets angry after seeing the eagerness of the soldiers of Pakistan to die by the bullets of the Indian Army. Editor Shakti Hasija was busy handling this web series, so editing also did not turn out to be anything special.
On the one hand, productions like The Family Man, Siege, Special Ops or Uri are seen, then it seems that now perhaps international level work will be seen in India as well. It may happen at the technical level, but it is not known when the story will get rid of the formula. To see the brave complete is the work of bravery. It can also be seen with the family but its screenplay is so messed up and many formulas have been added that the viewer knows everything before anything happens. If you have patience and bravery, then see. Even if you don’t see it, there will be no sorrow.
