Anuj Gautam/SagarGenerally, anything offered to God with devotion is called prasad. But on the occasion of Rath Dooj, offering of Malpua to Lord Jagannath has special importance. Prasad becomes even more special for the devotees who love God. This is the reason why there is a competition among people to buy this prasad in Sagar of Bundelkhand.
An area of the city is known as Mini Vrindavan. There are more than 100 temples in an area of one kilometer. Most of them are Lord Krishna’s Rath Yatra. A dozen yatras are held here. In many temples, the Lord comes out of the sanctum sanctorum and gives darshan to the devotees. There is a tradition of offering Malpua to him on this day.
The shop opens for only 5 hours in a year
Malpua is available only for 5 to 6 hours in one day out of 365 days of the year. However, for this, 100 shops are decorated in an area of about 500 meters. This is being traditionally followed from generation to generation. The devotees living here buy this prasad and offer it to God. Devotees from far-off places also come to see the Rath Yatra. They buy Malpua and offer it to God. It is distributed as prasad.
Malpua is available at Rs 400 per kg
Umesh Tamrakar, owner of a Malpua shop in Bada Bazar area, told Local 18 that he has been making Malpua since three generations. It is made as Prasad only once a year and that too for a few hours. It is considered to be the favourite offering to Lord Jagannath and Krishna. It is made from pure ghee and Dalda. The pure ghee Malpua is available for Rs. 400 per kg. The Dalda one is sold for Rs. 200 per kg. After buying it from the devotees, they first offer it to the God. Then they take it to their homes where they eat it with great relish.
This is how Malpua is prepared
Jaggery, flour, fennel, black pepper and pure ghee are needed to make Malpua. Before making Malpua, soak the jaggery in water. When it swells, prepare a batter by adding water. Mix this batter with flour and prepare a thin batter of flour and jaggery. When pure ghee starts boiling in the pan, pour the batter into the pan from a small vessel. When it is cooked, take it out and keep it aside. Apart from the city, people come from far away to buy these Malpuas.
