Farmers are selling paddy in the mandis due to higher price and cash payment as compared to government purchasing centres. This is the reason why on one hand there is silence at the government purchasing centres, while on the other hand, there is a crowd of farmers gathering in the market.
This time there has been a bumper crop of paddy in Aligarh district. Before the festival, farmers are busy selling paddy. In such a situation, due to higher prices in the market and payment being made in person, farmers are selling paddy directly in the markets instead of purchasing centres. While the support price of coarse paddy at government purchasing centers is Rs 2300 per quintal, the price of the same paddy is available up to Rs 2500 in the market.
The price of Grade A paddy at government purchasing centers is Rs 2320. Farmers are getting the price of this paddy in the market up to Rs 3200. This is the reason why while 12 lakh quintals of paddy has been sold in the mandis so far, only 40 quintals of paddy has been purchased at the government purchasing centres.
The situation of crowd in the market is such that no space is available to keep the paddy here. Farmers have to wait for hours. Apart from the farmers of the district, farmers from Hathras, Etah, Agra, Kasganj, Mainpuri, Firozabad are coming to the market with paddy. Apart from Dhanipur, bumper procurement of paddy is being done in the markets of Khair, Gabhana, Atrauli, Harduaganj, Chharra, Iglas in the district.
There is low yield of coarse paddy (common and grade A) in Aligarh division. The farmers here grow more Basmati and Sugandha rice. 25 government paddy purchasing centers are open in the district. Presently the arrival of coarse paddy is less. More Basmati paddy is arriving. Currently only 40 quintals of paddy and 300 quintals of millet have been purchased.– Rajeev Kulshrestha, District Food Marketing Officer
