The son of a 45-year-old cab driver who died after a portion of the terminal roof collapsed at Delhi airport amid heavy rains said the family will decide on filing a case after his father’s cremation. Police handed over the body of cab driver Ramesh Kumar to his family after post-mortem at Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday, a day after the incident, officials said.

Ramesh’s 25-year-old son Ravinder said, “Around 12.30 pm we received my father’s body after post-mortem and will return to our home. We will go for the cremation near our house around 3.30 pm.” He said that after his father’s cremation, all the family members will discuss and decide whether they will file a case against those responsible for his father’s death.

Ramesh was waiting for some passengers at IGI T-1 on Friday morning when a portion of the canopy covering the departure area fell on parked cars amid three hours of heavy rain in the national capital. Six people were also injured in the incident, which forced authorities to suspend flights. On Friday, Ravinder had told PTI that he was sleeping when he received a call from the police station asking him to immediately come to Delhi airport’s Terminal-1.

Ramesh is survived by his wife Asha, two sons, Ravinder and Ashish (22), and two daughters, Rashi (21) and Bhavana (18). All of them live in a rented house in Vijay Vihar area of Rohini, close to the sector. Asha works as a domestic help in Rohini. Upset over the compensation amount offered by the government, Ravinder had said that he had recently purchased the vehicle for Rs five lakh and had to make a down payment of Rs one lakh. Civil Aviation Minister K Ramamohan Naidu visited the airport and took stock of the situation at the T-1. He announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family.
