Jagdeep’s family background
The film name of Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, born on 29 March 1939 in Dhatiya, Madhya Pradesh, is Jagdeep. Jagdeep’s father Syed Yawar Hussain Jafri was a barrister, while mother Kaneez Fatima was a housewife. Jagdeep had 6 brothers and 2 sisters, out of which Jagdeep was the youngest.
When Jagdeep was very young, his father died and partition took place in 1947 in which his entire property was lost. Many of Jagdeep’s brothers and sisters went to Pakistan but his mother was adamant that she would not leave her country and go anywhere.
She had become very poor and Jagdeep had a brother living in Mumbai. His mother came to Mumbai with little Jagdeep. His brothers also used to do small jobs and due to poverty, his mother started feeling very worried.
Jagdeep’s struggle to success story
Tabassum, who interviews famous actresses and celebrities, had told in a video that Jagdeep’s mother got upset and sat in front of a Dargah. Seeing him sitting in that hall, people started giving money which irritated Jagdeep. As a teenager, Jagdeep started selling combs, soap, handkerchiefs, incense sticks and pens on the streets.
Tabassum had told in her video that Jagdeep had a playful nature and used to make the people around him laugh. One day a man came to him and asked, ‘How much do you earn?’ To this Jagdeep replied, ‘I earn four annas.’ So the man said, ‘Come with me, I will give you double of it.’
Jagdeep asked what work he wanted them to do. On this the man said that he will make you work in films and make you a junior artist. Jagdeep understood and left. BR Chopra made the film Afsana (1951) with Ashok Kumar and Veena. Teenager Jagdeep had a very small role in this film in which he became a doorman in the assembly by holding a spear and being happy with his work, the producer gave him a fee of Re 1 instead of 8 annas. After ‘Afsana’, Jagdeep worked in films as a junior artist for about 2-3 years. In that video, Tabassum had told that whatever Jagdeep earned, he used to give it to his mother. His mother used to pray a lot and those prayers also bore fruit. In the year 1953, famous filmmaker Vimal Roy gave an important role to Jagdeep in his film ‘Do Bigha Zameen’.
After this, his luck brightened and in the year 1957, his film Bhabhi came as a lead actor in which his co-actress was Nanda. After this he worked as a lead actor with different heroines. In those films, Jagdeep played the role of a serial lead actor who romances, sings songs and speaks dialogues, but he did not like all this. Tabassum had told in the video that Jagdeep used to say that the hero does not have to do anything and now he has to change his track.
He did the same and decided to become a comedian. Because of which the man liked her. After this, Jagdeep did ‘Sholay’, ‘Gajab’, ‘Andaz Apna-Apna’, ‘Do Anjaane’, ‘Pratigya’, ‘Purana Mandir’, ‘Shahenshah’, ‘Phool aur Kante’, ‘Brahmachari’, ‘Nagina’, Worked as a comedian in many superhit films like ‘Jaani Dushman’, ‘Roti’. According to reports, Jagdeep had worked in about 400 films in his film career.
Jagdeep’s personal life
Jagdeep first married Sughra Begum in 1960, with whom he had two sons, Javed and Naved Jafri. Both of them are actors, directors and producers. After this Jagdeep had another marriage. Only Jagdeep’s sons came into films, out of which Javed Jaffrey plays the role of comedian and villain.
Jagdeep passes away
Jagdeep started his career as a teenager and worked till his last days. Jagdeep died on 8 July 2020. In a video of Tabassum, she told that Jagdeep had done an interview with her in which he had said, ‘Death is the biggest truth in the world. I am Jagdeep, I have come, I have filled the world with lamps and even when I go, I will keep making people laugh. This is what I have to say…come smiling, go smiling.
