Study exposed the reality of government hospitals, 50% prescriptions had errors

A new study has found that about 50% of the prescriptions written by doctors in government hospitals have errors. These errors are in the quantity, duration and frequency of giving the medicines. The highest number of errors were found in community medicine, ENT and pediatric departments. This can increase the cost of treatment and put patients’ health at risk. The study has suggested that doctors should be given better training and prescriptions should be checked regularly. This can reduce these errors.

Study reveals
The study found that there are many types of mistakes in doctors’ prescriptions. These include mistakes in the correct amount of medicines, for how long to take them, and how often to take them. Serious mistakes were found in about 10% of the prescriptions, which can be dangerous for the health of patients. This study has found that almost every second prescription written by doctors of top government hospitals, such as AIIMS and Safdarjung, deviates from standard treatment guidelines. This study has been published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

Know where mistakes are happening
The study found that the most errors occur in community medicine, ENT, and pediatric OPDs. Especially, more errors were found in community medicine because these OPDs are run by junior doctors. This means that due to lack of experience, there are more errors in prescriptions. To improve this, better training and regular review is needed.

Errors found in slips
4,838 prescriptions were studied from outpatient departments (OPD) of major hospitals across the country. This analysis understood the deviations from standard treatment guidelines in prescriptions written by doctors. This study was conducted to check the quality of prescriptions in government hospitals.

Know what mistakes doctors are making
A patient was given two antibiotics for anal fissure, while it could have been cured with local medicines only. This increased the cost of treatment and also increased the risk of antibiotic resistance. In simple words A patient was given two antibiotics for anal fissure (injury in the anus), whereas it could have been cured with just a cream or gel. This made the treatment expensive and also increased the risk of the medicines losing their effect.
