Supreme Court: The Supreme Court made an important remark on the petition regarding the proceedings initiated against Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan in a criminal defamation case, saying that you cannot take everything to heart in politics. Union Minister Murugan had approached the apex court last year challenging the order of the Madras High Court dated September 5, 2023.
In December 2020, the Madras High Court had refused to quash proceedings against Murugan on a complaint filed by the Chennai-based Murasoli Trust over his alleged defamatory statements during a press conference.
‘There is no question of defamation’
The Supreme Court had agreed to hear his petition on September 27 last year and stayed the proceedings pending against Union Minister Murugan in a special court in Chennai. The Supreme Court bench had also sought a response from the Murasoli Trust on his petition. When the matter came up for hearing before a bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Vishwanathan on Friday (September 20, 2024), the lawyer appearing for Murugan said, “Where is the question of defamation in this case?”

The lawyer appearing on behalf of the trust requested to postpone the hearing of the case. The bench said that in politics you cannot take everything to heart. The Supreme Court said, “On the request of the respondent’s lawyer, the hearing will be held after four weeks.” Union Minister Murugan had approached the High Court challenging the proceedings against him. The High Court had said in its order that according to the trust, Murugan had made the statement with an ulterior motive to spoil and tarnish the reputation of Murasoli Trust in the eyes of the general public.
