There is an interesting story behind ‘Langra Mango’ getting this name. This 250 years old story is related to a Shiva temple in Banaras. There used to be a priest in this Shiva temple who was missing one leg. Everyone called this priest a lame priest. One day a sage Maharaj came and planted two mango trees in the temple. The monk started to leave but he asked the priest not to give this mango fruit to anyone. As you know, it takes years for a mango tree to bear fruit. After many years the mango tree bore fruits. The sage had refused but the king of Banaras took the mangoes from the lame priest. Gradually this variety of mango spread from Banaras to the entire country under the name of ‘Langra Pujari’. Since then this variety of mango came to be called Langra.
Not only Lagada, many other varieties of mango also have very interesting names. Like ‘Dussehri Mango’ or ‘Hathi Jhool Mango’. It is said that The first Dussehri mango tree was planted in Dussehri village near Kakori station. This is the reason why this variety of mango was named ‘Dussehri Mango’ after the name of this village in UP. Apart from Dussehri, Chausa mango is also named after a village. Talking about ‘Hathi Jhool Mango’, this mango is of the largest size. One fruit of Hathi Jhool mango weighs approximately 3 to 3.5 kilograms. It is said that this mango was named by a farmer from Saharanpur after seeing it hanging.
